Patrick: I’m from North Carolina, grew up in Greensboro. I heard Moondance by Van Morrison when I was 14
and was dumbfounded. That began a long-time obsession with Van and his influences, in particular classic
soul music like Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Stax & Motown, etc. So it all kind of begins and ends with Van, but
there have been some other big influences along the way – Simon & Garfunkel, Oasis, Sigur Ros, David Gray
come to mind.
IAE: Take us through the creative process of producing a new song?
Patrick: It usually starts with a chord progression, maybe a bit of a melody. I usually have to meditate on it a
while; leave it, walk around, maybe sleep on it and it gradually evolves and takes shape. And lyrics take
forever. Sometimes a song comes in a flash, but it’s usually a slow process.
IAE: You recently released an album entitled “Communion Bread.” What has been the most difficult
part about promoting the album from a D.I.Y. perspective?
Patrick: It’s so difficult to standout. Because there are so many self-promotion tools now, tons of people are
out there competing for people’s attention. I’m no marketing wizard, so I just try to make sure as many people
as possible hear the music and see what happens.
IAE: How do you book gigs and is there a tour coming soon?
Patrick: As with everything else, I book the gigs by calling and emailing places myself. I’ve been playing with
cello & electric guitar and have more or less decided to avoid playing clubs. Instead we’re playing cafes,
restaurants, art shows, bookstores, museums, etc. I kind of like being background music. Should be a tour in
the southeast soon; more details to come.
IAE: Where can people buy your music and keep up with you?
Patrick: I’m eager to sell the CD before selling the album digitally. I’m sending a free exclusive digital album to
anyone who buys the physical CD – it’s called A Decade Begins. I’ll record one song each month of 2010 and
send it to those who purchased the CD. I’ve started to miss the album experience, and I really feel these 5
songs belong together, so I’m offering this incentive so people can get the full experience. The best place to
buy it is my website prattleonrick.com. That’s also the best place togo for news. Otherwise, it’s available on
iTunes, DigStation, Amazon, etc.
IAE: What is your ultimate goal with your music career?
Patrick: I want to make a living playing music that moves people the way it’s moved me.
