I’d be on the Forbes 400 if I had a dollar for every time I heard an unsigned
recording artist or band say they’re a better singer, a better dancer, a better guitar
player, a better songwriter, a better ping pong player…I think you catch my drift?
Sadly, in many cases those unsigned musicians are telling the truth; I know several
of them personally, as I’m sure you do also.
So, why aren’t they signed, instead of the artists you hear on your city’s radio
stations? Well, there are an infinite number of reasons why this fact still holds true,
but I’m just going to stick with my Top 10 Reasons. My hope is that by the time you
finish reading this article, you will be able to tell your friend, cousin, sister, brother,
or 50 year old uncle who’s still trying to be a rapper or a rocker…why they haven’t
“made it.”
REASON 1: TALENTD BUT LAZY
In my opinion, this could be the #1 reason that most talented musicians don’t ever
make it. How many of you reading this either knows, or knows of, someone who is an
amazing talent but for some reason they can’t seem to get it going? I don’t doubt
that we can all relate to this, even when speaking of someone outside of the realm
of music.
Most of the time it’s because this person, or group of people, refuses to get up and
move! I’ve seen some musicians who are so talented that they would literally run
circles around the current artists we hear on the radio or see on TV, but they just
don’t have the work ethic as those signed acts.
Here are only a few signs that you are, or someone you know is a lazy artist or band:
a) avoids opportunities to work toward success
b) avoids important meetings with people who can open doors to success
c) would rather watch TV, play video games, or hang out in clubs than write, record,
and/or practice
d) makes excuses all the time, for never doing anything to advance their career
Of course, this list is much, much longer, but I digress. My grandfather was right
when he looked me in the eyes and said, “Son, the best way to be nothing is to not
do anything.” – R.I.P. Grandpa Easy
REASON 2: KNOW IT ALL
As the old saying goes, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him
drink.” This is the case with the know it alls of the world. Most of the time when you
run into someone who is over confident and knows everything already, it’s usually
because their family and/or friends have led them to believe they’re the pinnacle of
knowledge or musical prowess.
This over confidence usually morphs into what I like to call the, IAK (I Already Know)
Syndrome. I’ve run into far too many unsigned artists or bands who simply think they
know everything about the music business and the game of music. Notice I said
