we were born here, but we make excuses for why we’re not as successful as those
who come from other countries and build successful businesses state-side!
Usually our excuse is that it’s someone else’s fault that we’re not succeeding, and
musicians are leading the charge in this arena. With all rappers screaming out the
word “haters” on every song, I think musicians have just grown accustomed to
pointing the finger at someone for their lack of focus.

A lot of musicians will insist that it’s the fault of their ex-manager, former band mate,
the person they’re dating, or the fact that labels just can’t see talent; and to some
extent this may be true, but ultimately it’s their own fault that they haven’t been
successful. If these individuals would:
a) spend less time pointing fingers and more time looking for opportunities
b) take time out to realize that pointing fingers hasn’t gotten them anyplace
c) look at what they’re doing in their own lives, and decision making, that may be
prolonging their success then maybe they would actually get a record deal or
become the next big thing in the music business.

Oddly, some musicians will hire a manager and then do nothing the manager asks
them to do. Then when they fail, the first thing they do is blame the manager for that
failure? Can you say, “strange”?

Keep in mind…when you’re pointing the finger at someone else, you’re pointing
three right back at yourself.

REASON 6: ALL PLAY & NO WORK (DRUGS & BOOZE)
Many of us have heard the term “Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll,” and it’s clear that
the person(s) who came up with the quote undoubtedly knew someone who inspired
the classic term. We all know someone who has spent, or spends, more time playing
around than they have working toward success.

Turn on the TV, or browse the front page of any news website and you’ll see at least
one story where some entertainer (usually someone in the music biz) has either
been arrested for possession of, or being under the influence of, drugs or alcohol.
But these guys, and gals, have already met some level of extreme success if they’re
being written about in the tabloids. What kills me is when I meet an extremely
talented, but unheard of, up-and-coming musician or band who is already involved
in these types of “extra curricular” activities. How do you expect to be successful
when you have an addiction that is causing you to NOT succeed?

Many great musicians, and other entertainers, have overdosed or seen their
careers ruined by drugs and alcohol. So to quote an infamous recording artist,
whose name I will not speak…“Crack is wack!” Ever heard the slogan, “Just Say No”?

REASON 7: UNPROFESSIONALISM
Being unorganized and unprofessional is another issue that most people in the
music industry have grown accustomed to. The term “fashionably late,” has put a lot
of musicians in the mindset that in order to be successful you have to be tardy. As if
being respectful and on time makes you less talented and uncool?

If you do any of the following things, you’re unprofessional and it’s probably a major
reason for your lack of success:

a) show up late to everything, including your own performances.
b) Curse people out just for the sake of being a jerk, or because you think it will
make them respect you more.
