On Saturday, July 30, 2011, the Atlanta Chapter of The Recording Academy®, in association with Kennesaw State University's Joel A. Katz Music &
Entertainment Business Program, brought together some of the music industry's top recording professionals and executives for the "Grammy®
GPS: A Road Map For Today's Music Biz" event in northwest Atlanta.
The day-long seminar took place at the Dr. Bailey Performing Arts Center on the campus of Kennesaw State University and offered a number of
key discussion panels. Each panel consisted of three or more panelists and a moderator who asked his/her group of panelists a number of
thought provoking questions before opening up questioning to the audience in attendance.
The Grammy® GPS event began with the "Grammy® Foundation Music Supervisor Panel" which gave attendees a great deal of insight into the
world of music supervision for film and television. Some of the many topics discussed included -- music licensing and publishing, copyright
clearance, and how to submit songs to a music supervisor on a film or television project. The discussion panelists included: Maureen Crowe
(Moderator), PJ Bloom, Joel C. High and Alexandra Patsavas, each of whom are well respected music supervisors in the entertainment industry.
Following the 'Music Supervisor's Panel' came the "MusiCares Vocal Tech Workshop", where music artists learned about the importance of taking
care of their singing voice. This particular panel featured multi-platinum certified vocal coach/vocal producer to the stars, Jan Smith (Justin Bieber,
Usher, Rob Thomas) as the moderator, while the discussion panelists in attendance were Grammy® nominated vocalist - Kelly Price,
Otolaryngologist/Director of the Emory Voice Center at Emory University - Dr. Michael M. Johns III, and gold/platinum selling founding member of
the rock band Collective Soul, Ed Roland.
After a lunch recess, the event kicked back in gear with the "Producers & Engineers Wing Panel", where some of the music industry's top audio
engineers/producers discussed the dos and don'ts of recording and the importance of a great mix. Moderated by Maureen Droney who is the
Exec. Director of the Producers & Engineers Wing at both The Recording Academy® and NARAS, this panel featured such multi-platinum audio
engineers/producers as - Mike Clink (Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine), Ken "Duro" Ifill (Jay Z and Alicia Keys - Empire State of Mind), and DJ
Swivel (Beyonce's - 4 album).
The event concluded with the "Indie Revolution Panel", where unsigned/independent artists learned the key components to building a fan base
and growing your business without the assistance of a major record company. This discussion panel was moderated by Rich Bengloff, the
president of the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM), and featured several successful independent recording artists and
musicians, including: Moses Archuleta (drummer/keyboardist of the band Deerhunter), Aleon Craft (hip-hop artist), Rachael Sage of the
international band 'The Sequins', and Tor Hansen (founder of Redeye Distribution and co-founder of Yep Rock Music Group).
One of the best music seminars I've ever attended, this Grammy® GPS event was a Saturday well spent. I Am Entertainment recommends that
anyone interested in attending future events/panels hosted by The Recording Academy®, go visit their website and become a member.
A special thanks to Michele Caplinger, Sr. Exec. Dir. of The Recording Academy® Atlanta Chapter; Bruce Burch, Keith Perissi, Heather Malcolm,
and Cigi George at the Joel A. Katz Music & Entertainment Business Program at Kennesaw State University.
