Nia Imani
IAE: Please tell us where you’re from and what is a typical day like for you?
NIA:
I’m a native Atlantan. I wake up Monday through Friday at 7am. I do yoga for about 15 minutes, and then I
get cleaned and dressed for the day. Afterward, I eat breakfast, and then from 8am to 3pm I do my school work
and enjoy a 1 hour lunch. I’m home schooled through Georgia Virtual Academy. Once that’s done, I practice
piano for 2 hours, vocal for 30 minutes, and acting for 30 minutes. If I have an audition or a business meeting
that day, I fit my schedule around the meetings. By 6pm, I’m free to do whatever I want, like play. Also, I only
watch TV on weekends.

IAE: So far, what training have you had in acting, singing, and dancing?
NIA:
With acting, I’ve trained with Diane Hardin in Improv and Scene Study; Lane Napper and Mike Caron in
Improv and Professional Acting; Howard Meltzer in Audition Technique; Marcy Philips in Auditioning for Film
and TV; Doriane Elliot and Ed Lewis in Voiceover Acting; The Company Acting Studio in Improv Audition
Technique for Stage and On-camera, Commercial Acting, and Scene Study. yourACT for Improv Film-
Commercial Audition Technique, and Stage Performance. Actor’s Scene for Improv, Film Acting, Commercial
Acting, Scene Study, Monologues, Audition Technique and Cold-read.

For singing I’ve studied with Badiene Magaziner, Tricia Grey, and Keleen Miskin.

For dancing I’ve taken Hip Hop/Krumping, Ballet and Jazz at Dance411. Susan’s Dance Studio I’ve taken Hip
Hop. And while performing in Broadway with The Lion’s King, I was introduced to African and Modern Dance.

IAE: You have accomplished a lot in your young age. How do you stay focused on your acting and
singing careers, when your friends want you to go and hang out?
NIA:
I stay focused on my acting and singing career by having fun and loving what I do. It’s definitely a
sacrifice, but it’s one I don’t mind because I see the big picture. Also, my parent’s make sure that I still have
time to play with my family and friends.

IAE: You were one of the youngest Affiliates to be invited to SESAC Atlanta, please tell us about
that?
NIA:
I was 10-years-old when my parents met Associate Director of Writer and Publisher Relations, Mr.
Cappriccieo Scates, at an industry networking event. My mom, who is my manager, set up an appointment for
me to meet with him. At the appointment he interviewed me and I sang Billie Holliday’s, God Bless The Child.
He was so impressed with me and with my songwriting that he invited my mom and me to be an affiliate.

IAE: So you were Young Nala in the Broadway play, “Disney’s The Lion King”; how did you get that
role and what did you enjoy most about being on stage?
NIA:
Disney Theatrical Productions were having nationwide auditions and came to Atlanta in April of 2008.
Thousands of kids auditioned and I was one of the little girls who was blessed with the opportunity to play the
role of Young Nala. When I’m on stage I enjoy looking out into the audience and seeing their smiling faces. It
just makes me smile.

IAE: Can you please tell us about your CD and tour, and who you’re currently working with, and
when can we expect your CD to be released?
NIA:
My desire to be on The Ellen DeGeneres Show inspired me to write the lyrics and compose the music for
my debut single “Your Journey Begins,” which I co-produced with Errol Moore. The single releases digitally on
March 18, 2010 and my debut album comes out in the summer of 2010. The album will include all types of
music because I am a global artist. A group of child entertainers and I are currently stimulating minds through
music by touring underserved public schools, Boy’s and Girls Clubs and Malls.

IAE: What is the hardest lesson you’ve had to learn about the movie business so far?
NIA:
The hardest lesson that I’ve learned about movies is that it can be very time consuming and you can be
on the set for 12 hours just to shoot one scene but it’s really worth it.

IAE: Where would you like to see yourself in the next 5 years?
NIA:
In 5 years, I will be 17 so I’ll be finished with high school. I’d like to be a Grammy winning recording artist,
and an award winning actress. I would also like to have a successful clothing line.
