If you took offense to the title, then chances are you’ve heard someone tell you
this before. Either way, read this article before you get your tank top all wrinkled,
because you may find that it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with
others.
1. Your story’s structure may be the cause of your script being out of sync and not
making sense. Many times, writers will go to 5 or 6 workshops and learn multiple
ways of structuring a story. When you have too many people teaching you starkly
different story structuring techniques, it’s likely that you’ll end up mixing together
portions of each writing technique. This could lead to your script having no “flow”
and can ruin a great story before it even gets started good.
2. Poor dialogue is more often than not, a big issue with a lot of scripts I’ve read.
Some writers have a great story, but the characters have absolutely nothing interesting to say. This happens a lot among new
or untrained writers. Understanding the dynamics between each character is key to the success of a script. If someone has
given you feedback that your dialogue needs to be stronger, don’t take offense to it, instead take it as a compliment that you’
re on the right track.
3. Ego is another issue that could be a reason your script isn’t very good. Not being able to take constructive criticism from
others is a major road block to writing a great script. Some writers feel that their script is the best script ever written, so they
blindly approach it as such and find out that their work isn’t as great as they thought. Great writers don’t become great
because they were unwilling to take instruction early on, instead they were students of the craft and learned through humility.
4. Another reason your script probably sucks is that you have far too many distractions going on in your life that render you
incapable of creating a great screenplay. This is why so many writers shut themselves off from the world and disappear for
extended periods of time. They understand that distractions lead to breaks in creativity, which could be the death nail to their
ideas. So shut the world off and go write your story already.
5. A big reason your script could suck is because you’re pitching it to the wrong person at the wrong time. It’s not uncommon
for writers to give a comedy to someone whose history is in another genre. So be sure you’re pitching it to the right people.
