Marla Mase comes roaring out of the Big Apple's concrete jungle as a funky rock lioness
whose voice and message of peace has been heard around the world. On Marla's new
SPEAK Deluxe album release, the NYC queen blends alternative rock and funk music
with powerful messages that she delivers in confidence through spoken word vocal form.
Upon first listen, you may be taken aback if you're expecting the "norm". That's because,
Marla Mase, is anything but normal in her approach to making music. The band is like a
funk, classic rock, jazz fusion; very Frank Zappa meets Iggy Pop sounding. Marla, on the
other hand, delivers a passionate Broadway actor-like vocal performance that reels you
in and keeps you engaged in the story she's telling.
Songs like "Piece of Peace" and "She Hooked Him Up" showcase the eclectic, funk-rock
sound that is SPEAK DELUXE. I wasn't expecting the theatrical spoken word elements
Marla wields as her vocal sword, but it is a definite attention getter and has boded well for
the singer/songwriter/activist who was awarded a 'Messenger of Peace" award by Friends
of the UN, among other accolades.
Overall, there are very few albums on the market that will compare to SPEAK DELUXE;
offering a break from what has become a comfort zone for many. Anything but
commercial, Marla Mase is surely an artist we will see more of in the years to come, and I
doubt that we'll be disappointed by what she releases. I'd absolutely recommend that
music fans give Marla's new release a listen with an open mind. You'll be glad you did.
